BAU DE CAP TRENCAT (PN)

Depth: 6-30m

Visibility: ≤25m

Current: Slow - Moderate

Dificulty: Easy - Moderate

About 5,5km by boat from Roses and also from Cala Joncols. The proper dive starts at 6-12m and very soon appear a group of big boulders wonderfully covered in a shiny red and magenta manto. You can see numerous fishes here, including cat shark, and you might even find the statue of a mermaid who is always waiting for a visit. Orientation is not always easy, so compass and a surface marker buoy is more than recommended.

The "priest"(according to the Catalan translation) is located in the Reserva Natural of Cap Norfeu, 700m further west of the cape. The wall runs out into the open sea almost at right angles to the coast and drops to about 14m, then it turns into a rocky plateau. There are not only many fish here, but also abundant vegetation and some species of nudibranchs.

The cape itself and the Gat (cat-shaped rock) are located in the Cap Norfeu Nature Reserve, about 8 km from Roses and just over 2 km from Cala Jóncols. From 16 to 40m the bottom is covered with red gorgonians and lobsters, groupers and schools swimming from side to side can be seen, among many other creatures. In season sunfish can be spotted around and even you might be lucky enough to witness the Mediterranean "sardine run". Moderate to strong currents are to be expected around the cape.

EL CLOT DEL BOC (RNP)

Depth: 8-30m

Visibility: ≤25m

Current: Slow - Moderate

About 10km away from Roses and a stone's throw from Cala Joncols; just about five minutes drive by boat. From the surface to a depth of about 30m there are nicely overgrown walls with nudibranchs on top, lobsters and red corals below, as well as some groupers and moray eels around. It is common to end the dive by entering a canyon that ends in a small grotto with a chimney inhabited by shrimps and crabs.

Just 2km northeast of Cala Jóncols and just under 11km from the port of Roses. The the buoy line reaches a depth of 16m, and when descending to 27m, rocks covered with gorgonian seafans appear where lobsters, conger eels and moray eels live. There is a rocky bottom at a depth of 20m and as we ascend again at 16m we find a cave with a narrow chimney leading up that it is possible to cross, but only when the sea is calm. Some schools of fish crowd around corners, especially when buffeted by currents.

Regarded as the best dive site on the entire Costa Brava, however this superlative place is not always diveable. It is east of Cap de Creus on the island of the same name. There are plenty of gorgonian seafan corals and fish on the northwest side, and there is always something to see, from big to small. Speedboat departure from Cala Jóncols on special request with extra charge. For six experienced divers, it's mostly a one-way dive.
